How We Evaluate Products
Our Evaluation Process
Every comparison and recommendation published on Later Life Planning follows the same structured evaluation process. Rather than recommending products based on a single feature, we assess each provider against a consistent set of criteria to help readers understand which products may be suitable for different needs.
For example, when creating our equity release comparison guides, we don't simply compare interest rates. We review product flexibility, repayment options, inheritance protection, eligibility criteria, lender reputation, regulatory status and the overall value offered. This allows us to recommend products that may be suitable for different financial circumstances rather than simply highlighting the lowest rate.
Our Evaluation Criteria
The criteria we use vary depending on the type of product being reviewed. While price is an important consideration, we also assess factors such as value, flexibility, provider reputation and the features included within each product. This allows us to recommend products based on their overall suitability rather than a single characteristic. Such as:
Overall value – We look beyond headline rates to assess the overall value a product provides, including flexibility and long-term costs.
Interest rates and fees – We compare rates alongside any advice, valuation, legal or arrangement fees where applicable.
Flexibility – We assess features such as voluntary repayments, drawdown facilities, downsizing protection and inheritance protection.
Provider reputation – We consider customer reviews, financial strength, industry reputation and history.
Regulation – We verify providers are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) where applicable and comply with current industry standards.
Product features – We compare the features, protections and options available with each product.
Suitability – We recognise that different products suit different circumstances and explain who each option may be appropriate for.
How Products Are Ranked
Our rankings are based on the overall value and suitability of a product rather than any single factor. The cheapest option is not always ranked highest, and the most expensive product is not automatically considered the best.
Instead, we assess how well each product performs across our evaluation criteria before making a recommendation. Where appropriate, we explain why one plan may be more suitable for a particular type of customer than another.
Keeping Our Reviews Up to Date
Financial products and provider information can change over time. We regularly review our comparison pages and update them when providers introduce new products, amend pricing, change eligibility criteria or regulations are updated. Every comparison guide displays the date it was last reviewed so readers know when the information was most recently checked.
